Health & Safety
I always check the CentersforDiseaseControl (cdc.gov) updates to see what they sug-
gest. There is a risk of Malaria in India and Lariam (generic is Mefloquine) is the Malaria
prophylaxis we use. A Tetanus booster is the most important inoculation in my estimation
(we keep ours up-to-date religiously). It is not commonly known that you can get Lockjaw
from contaminated dirt and even surface abrasions. Most people think that only a deep cut
puts them at danger...not so. Hepatitis A and B are second on the list. Bring your other per-
sonal "drugs of choice." Boiled or bottled water is available throughout, but we also bring
iodine tablets for emergency purification situations.
TIP: Antibiotics can be bought over-the-counter in India
without a Doctor's prescription, but not “Controlled
substances.”
Even though bottled water is available throughout India, consider bringing iodine tablets
for emergency purification situations. Don't even think of using tap water! WASH YOUR
HANDS...KEEP HANDS AWAY FROM EYES! (ex-Marine picked up a nasty eye infec-
tion in China). Otherwise, cleanliness is next to Godliness when traveling India.
Gujarat is currently safe to visit. Get up-to-date travel warnings from U.K. Foreign and
Commonwealth Office (fco.gov.uk) and United States (travel.state.gov) websites.
