The most interesting place to stay in Rio, designed and run
by the BBC's former Rio correspondent, and famous for its
BED AND BREAKFAST IN SANTA TERESA
Given Rio's long association with glamour and international tourism, the city's hotels and
hostels are in general remarkably disappointing. One refreshing development has been the
emergence of a B&B network called
Cama e Café in Santa Teresa, offering considerable
comfort and the opportunities to meet local residents. They are now offering places in other
neighbourhoods too, including Copacabana, Ipanema and São Conrado.
Group members comprise a fascinating cross section of the community, including artists,
academics and even circus-arts trainers. Almost all speak English and they're tremendous
sources of local knowledge and advice. The hosts and their properties have been vetted and
graded by Cama e Café staff according to style and levels of comfort. Prices for a double room
range from R$130 to R$220 per night, and every effort is made to match guests to suitable
hosts. For information, contact Cama e Café, Rua Paschoal Carlos Magno 90, Santa Teresa
( T 21 2225 4366, W camaecafe.com).
