ACCOMMODATION AND EATING
Torres has dozens of hotels, with many of the cheaper ones located on Barão do Rio Branco and the two streets running
parallel to it. Even so, in midsummer accommodation is predictably di cult to track down, so try to arrive early in the day.
All the best restaurants are by the river, twenty to thirty minutes' walk from the centre. Either walk along Praia Grande
in the opposite direction from the lighthouse, or take the quicker route along Rua Sete de Setembro , a couple of streets
back from the beach.
Cantinho do Pescador Av Beira Rio 210 T 51 3626

Pelotas and around
Rio Grande do Sul's third-largest city, PELOTAS , 270km to the south of Porto Alegre,
is situated on the left bank of the Canal de São Gonçalo, which connects the massive
Lagoa dos Patos with the Lagoa Mirim. Founded in 1812 as a port for the charque
(jerked beef ) producers of the surrounding region, Pelotas rapidly emerged as the
wealthiest city in Rio Grande do Sul, becoming a byword for conspicuous
consumption - today the remnants of its golden age provide much of the allure. The
main square of Pelotas, Praça Coronel Pedro Osório , is the city's heart, and most of its
very elegant, stuccoed buildings with wrought-iron balconies date from the nineteenth
or early twentieth centuries. The French-built fountain in the centre, “As Nereidas”,
was erected in 1873 to replace the old whipping post.
Memorial dos Ex-Prefeitos
Praça Coronel Pedro Osório 101 • Mon-Fri 1.30-6pm • Free • T 53 3225 7355
Set grandly on the main plaza, the Prefeitura Municipal was completed in 1881
and contains a small history exhibit, the Memorial dos Ex-Prefeitos , commemorating
the administrators of city hall over the decades, through documents and
ageing photographs.
Biblioteca Pública
Praça Coronel Pedro Osório 103 • Mon-Fri 9am-6pm • Free • T 53 3222 3856
The city's Biblioteca Pública , a pink Neoclassical confection raised between 1878 and
1881, contains the tiny Museu Histórico e Bibliográfico, with miscellaneous bits and
pieces relating to the history of Pelotas and the old library.
Grande Hotel
Praça Coronel Pedro Osório 51 • Mon-Fri 9am-noon & 12.30-6.30pm • Free • T 53 3225 3733
The former Grande Hotel was built in Art Nouveau style between 1925 and 1928;
today you can take a peek at the two contemporary art galleries inside, with a roster of
changing exhibitions, mostly from local artists.
