In-Depth Information
Tílias. As the dense forest around the settlement was gradually cleared, more settlers
joined the colony, but after Germany's annexation of Austria in 1938, immigration
came to an end - as did funds to help support the pioneers during the di cult first
years. The area eventually came to specialize in dairy farming, and today its milk
products are sold in supermarkets throughout Santa Catarina. The Tirolerfest
( W tirolerfest.com.br) during the first two weeks of October is a lively display of
Austrian folk traditions including singing and dancing.
But for the absence of snowcapped mountain peaks, the general appearance of Treze
Tílias is not dissimilar to that of a small Alpine village. Walking in any direction, you'll
pass through peaceful pastoral landscapes; the gentle 7km walk to the chapel in the
hamlet of Babenberg is particularly rewarding. If you decide to visit the local waterfalls
a few kilometres outside town, get very detailed directions before setting out.
In Treze Tílias itself, try to visit some of the woodcarvers , several of whom have
shops in the centre of the village where items, large and small, are for sale. The best
woodcarvers learned their craft in Europe, and their work is in demand from churches
throughout Brazil.

Austria. Completed in 1937, the house was initially the residence of town founder

instantly distinguishable from the Austrians' chalets. Thanks to the Italians, this is
Brazil's "Capital do Vinho", and vines dominate the landscape.
