In-Depth Information
Pomerode
Colonization of POMERODE , 30km north of Blumenau on SC-418, began in 1863, when
a friend of Dr Blumenau, one Ferdinand Hackrath, first led settlers from Pomerania into
the area around the Rio do Testo. Today Pomerode remains the most German town in
Brazil; not only are ninety percent of its 28,000 widely dispersed inhabitants descended
from German immigrants, but 70 percent of the município 's population continue to
speak the language. There are no major sights, but the town's leafy plazas, beer gardens
and traditional enxaimel buildings make for a pleasant half-day trip.

ROTA DO ENXAIMEL
Pomerode boasts the largest collection of enxaimel buildings (“Fachwerk” in German;
exposed bricks within an exposed timber frame) outside Germany - some 240 structures
scattered throughout the municipality. The highest concentration is located in the Testo Alto
neighbourhood (north of the centre, signposted off SC-110), where around fifty buildings
line a 16km stretch of road (Rua Testo Alto) dubbed “Rota do Enxaimel”, beginning with the
Pórtico do Imigrante “Wolfgang Weege”, a replica of a city gate from the old Pomeranian city
of Stettin (now Szczecin in Poland). Other highlights include the Casa Comercial Weege
(Testo Alto and Rua Hermann Weege), where you can buy traditional foodstuffs (Sat
7.30am-12.30pm), the old church and cemetery, the Igreja Evangélica de Confissão Luterana
de Testo Alto and Cemitério dos Imigrantes (at Testo Alto and Rua Gustav Krahn), and the
1867 Pousada Casa Wachholz , now a hotel (at Rua Progreso 2320). You'll need your own
transport to make the most of the route.
