Museu da Cerveja
Praça Hercílio Luz/Rua XV Novembro 160 • Mon-Fri 9am-5pm, Sat & Sun 10am-4pm • Free • T 47 3326 6791
Shady Praça Hercílio Luz contains the small Museu da Cerveja , a tribute to the
beer-making traditions of Blumenau (and a nod to Oktoberfest, with mugs and
posters). Most of the city's beermakers went out of business after World War II, and
the museum displays some ageing equipment from the defunct Feldmann Brewery
(and a pair of 1930s clodhoppers) dating from the 1890s through to the 1960s.
Museu da Família Colonial
Alameda Duque de Caxias 78 • Tues-Sun 10am-4pm • R$3 • T 47 3322 1676
Th e city's de facto history museum, the Museu da Família Colonial lies on the “avenue
of palms”, comprising three historic buildings: the oldest was constructed in red brick
and timber enxaimel -style in 1858 for the Wendeburg family, while the main house next
door was completed in 1864 for the family of Dr Blumenau's nephew, Gaertner (the
family also built the third property in 1920). Th e two oldest houses have been fi lled
with period furniture and photographs of life in the settlement during its early years, but
it's in the beautiful forest-like Parque Edith Gaertner at the back that you'll fi nd the most
curious feature: the tiny Cemeterio do Gatos , the fi nal resting place for the much-loved
cats - Bum, Musch, Mirko and the rest - of the great-niece of Dr Blumenau.
