Joinville and around
The largest city in Santa Catarina state, JOINVILLE ('join-VEE-lay') is an ever-growing
sea of high-rises and a major centre for conferences that boasts one of the highest
standards of living in South America, evidence of an economy that has thrived in
Brazil's latest boom. There's not a lot in the way of sights, but it's a fun and friendly
place to stay for a night or two, while remnants of its German heritage provide some
historical allure. Shops and services are concentrated along Rua Princesa Isabel, Rua
XV de Novembro and Rua IX de Março, running parallel and terminating at the Rio
Cachoeira. The main plaza - Praça Nereu Ramos - is a rather shabby, modern affair,
with just one cheap café, domino tables and lots of concrete.
