EATING
Come evening, there's very little life in the commercial centre around Praça XV de Novembro. Instead, people head for the
bars and restaurants that spread out along the Beira Mar Norte (or Av Rubens de Arruda Ramos, as it is o cially
called), a dual carriageway that skirts the north of the city, lined with condo high-rises, and the parallel Almirante
Lamego , or head for much more fashionable Lagoa (see p.585). Where Mauro Ramos meets the Beira Mar, the giant
Beiramar Shopping mall (Mon-Sat 10am-10pm) contains dozens of chain outlets in the 3/F food court.

Ilha Santa Catarina
Beyond the city of Florianópolis, Ilha Santa Catarina is noted throughout Brazil for its
beaches, Mediterranean-like scenery and traditional fishing villages - the fishing boats,
lacemakers, folklore, cuisine and the colonial architecture add to the allure. The island has
a subtropical climate, rarely cold in winter and with a summer heat that is tempered by
refreshing South Atlantic breezes. Nevertheless, don't expect an untouched paradise. The
island is peppered with resorts and holiday condos, and is surprisingly built up, with its
mostly narrow roads often clogging up with local tra c regardless of tourists - this is one
of the richest parts of Brazil and it looks it. To make the most of the island you need to
take your time and get off the roads; there are still some sections of coast that remain wild
and untouched, but you'll often need to hike to reach them.
The following account assumes a clockwise route around the island from
Florianópolis - note that locals refer to the whole island as Florianópolis, with
the city known simply as centro .
