The Iguaçu Falls and around
he
IGUAÇU FALLS
are, unquestionably, one of the world's great natural wonders.
To describe their beauty and power is a tall order, but for starters cast out any ideas
that Iguaçu is some kind of Niagara Falls transplanted south of the equator; compared
to Iguaçu, with its total of 275 falls that cascade over a precipice 3km wide, Niagara
is a mere ripple. But it's not the falls alone that make Iguaçu so special: the vast
surrounding subtropical
nature reserve
- in Brazil the Parque Nacional do Iguaçu, in
Argentina the Parque Nacional de Iguazú - is a timeless haunt that even the hordes of
tourists fail to destroy.
The Iguaçu Falls are a short distance from the city of
Foz do Iguaçu
in Brazil,
Puerto
Iguazú
in Argentina and
Ciudad del Este
in Paraguay. Foz do Iguaçu and Puerto Iguazú are
both about 20km northwest of the entrances to the Brazilian Parque Nacional do Iguaçu
and the Argentine Parque Nacional de Iguazú, while Ciudad del Este is 7km northwest of
Foz do Iguaçu. Most tourists choose to stay in Foz do Iguaçu, much the largest and most
developed of the three places, though many visitors prefer the relative tranquillity and
frontier atmosphere of Puerto Iguazú. Ciudad del Este is a wholly unattractive border
town that mostly serves as a cheap shopping trip for Brazilian tourists, and is best avoided.
