In-Depth Information
Igreja Matriz de Santo Antônio
Praça General Carneiro • Tues-Sun 9-11.30am & 1-5pm • Free
Four blocks behind the rodoviária, Lapa's main church, the Igreja Matriz de Santo
Antônio , dominates the principal square, Praça General Carneiro. Built between 1769
and 1784, the church is a charmingly simple Portuguese colonial structure, but its
interior displays - all too typically - no original features.

Casa Lacerda
Rua XV de Novembro 103 • Tues-Sun 1.30-5pm • Free • T 41 3622 3524
There are several small museums of mild interest near the main church, most notably
the Casa Lacerda , a townhouse built in 1842 and furnished in period style opposite the
Panteon dos Herois. Local hero Joaquim de Rezende Correia de Lacerda was born here
in 1845, the man who defended the city during the Federalist Revolution in 1894,
with his troops dubbed pica-paus (woodpeckers).
Museu de Armas
Alameda David Carneiro • Sat & Sun 9-11.30am & 1-5pm • Free
Housed in the old Casa de Câmara e Cadeia (town hall and jail) of 1868, the Museu
de Armas contains a collection of primarily nineteenth-century weaponry, mostly
used by the Brazilian army during the Imperial period (Nordenfeld and Krupp
guns), as well as two engravings by French painter Jean-Baptiste Debret, made after
a visit here in 1827.

century and in the food carried by the cattle drivers who

São Paulo. No meal is complete without a plate of arroz de
carreteiro - charque (jerked beef ) cooked with rice, onion and
tomato (around R$30 per head). Mon 11am-2.30pm, Tues-

R$10; rock pillars only R$15 • T 42 3228 1539
For a taster of Paraná's rugged interior, head 100km northwest of Curitiba to the
spectacular Parque Estadual de Vila Velha , the site of 23 rock pillars ( arenitos ) carved
by time and nature from glacial sandstone deposits, which from a distance look like
monumental abstract sculptures or crumbling medieval towers. The formation is a
result of sand deposited between 300 and 400 million years ago during the
Carboniferous period, when the region was covered by a massive ice sheet. The
park also includes series of craters ( furnas ) and a tranquil lagoon rich in birdlife
( Lagoa Dourada ).
ARRIVAL AND DEPARTURE
PARQUE ESTADUAL DE VILA VELHA
By bus The best way to reach the park from the Curitiba
rodoferroviária is to take a Princesa dos Campos bus
( W princesadoscampos.com.br) straight there (daily
7.45am, 2.15pm & 5.15pm; 1hr 45min; R$23.82).
Alternatively, you can take any bus (roughly every hour) to
Ponta Grossa and ask to be let off at the park's entrance.
There are good late-afternoon bus services back to Curitiba,
so there's no chance of being left stranded. If you're
travelling on to Iguaçu, there's no need to return to Curitiba:
instead, take a bus to Ponta Grossa (20km) from where you
can catch an overnight service to Foz do Iguaçu.
