is the perfect place to stock up if you're staying in an
apartment-hotel in the area. Otherwise, check out the
luxury Brazilian food items that include preserves, wines

Eastern grocery store, fascinating though its shelves full of
exotic cans and jars may be, is to sample the sticky delights
of its Arabic pastries. A burma (a shredded wheat nest
drenched in syrup and filled with pistachios, almonds or
walnuts) goes for R$6. Mon-Fri 8.30am-6pm, Sun

Small bookshop with a particularly good selection of
foreign magazines and newspapers, and also some
guidebooks in English.
Livraria Cultura Conjunto Nacional building, Av

bookshop in São Paulo, spread over three different locales
and several floors within the same building (one specializes
in language, one in art, and the other - absolutely huge -
in everything else, including CDs). There's a great café here

charming community bookshop that, although well
stocked, may not be worth going out of the way for, but, as
it's open late, it's certainly worth dropping by if you're

warehouse-like secondhand record store (in two locations,
two doors from each other) is chock-full of Brazilian and
foreign vinyl, CDs and DVDs, at rock-bottom prices, but in no
particular order. You can find serious bargains here, but

street market, there are some interesting handicrafts,
vintage
records
and
semiprecious
stones.

house plants here and some stalls sell good Japanese
meals and snacks - usually prepared and sold by
kimono-clad Afro-Brazilians. Sat & Sun 9am-6pm.
Mercado de Antiguidades e Artes Praça Benedito

map p.499. Cheaper, livelier and with a larger collection
of bric-a-brac than the similar market beneath
MASP (see p.497), you may pick up the odd bargain
here. Some good restaurants are located around the
square and there are food stalls in the market itself.

This flea market has little worth purchasing, but lots of
