Although this bar has a nice neighbourhood feel to it, the
wide range of Brazilian music - including live samba and
MPB - draws a mixed crowd into the early hours of the
morning. A lively venue for some very good jazz and choro .

samba, pagode and MPB bands, with some acts starting

city's most venerable dance halls, this club incorporates a
fashion boutique, hair salon and bookshop, and when it
isn't in use for fashion shows, the performance space is a
nightclub, with evenings showcasing hugely varied music.

America's biggest dance festival, which has been taking
place in São Paulo every April/May since 2000. Clubs
playing electronic music are considered very much the
preserve of the young upper classes. Cover charges vary
wildly; expect to pay normally between R$15 and R$50,
sometimes with a drink or two thrown in, although if a big
name is DJing at a top club you could be looking at anything
up to R$100.

on the gay scene, this determinedly underground club
attracts a very diverse “mixed” crowd, especially on Thurs,
when it gets really packed. The music is mostly house and
techno, but Sun is rock night. Wed-Sat midnight-late,
Sun 7pm until not quite so late.

forró clubs, where they play both old-school (traditional
northeastern) and newfangled (electronic) varieties of
the genre. Very friendly but not exactly spacious. Opening
hours vary; usually Thurs-Sat 10.30pm-late, sometimes
Wed & Sun.

with nightly DJs playing anything from techno to baile to
an up-for-it crowd most nights of the week. Usually from
midnight.

plays indie, gothic, old wave and new wave - anything
from Joy Division to the Kinks. A very different vibe from
the dance music clubs. Fri & Sat 11pm-5am.

taste of the real Brazil, a bit rough round the edges but as
authentic as you'll get, leave your pretensions behind and
head down to this slightly gritty, old-school samba club,
where nobody stands on ceremony and everybody dances
with everybody, especially once the caipirinhas start
kicking in. Mon-Fri 9pm-3am, Sat 1pm-3am, Sun
7pm-midnight.
