Great-value Japanese food and lots of it: the
“festival de sushi” (R$46) - with vast amounts of sushi,
sashimi and other dishes too - takes some getting through,
and if you're in a singing mood, they've got a karaoke bar
upstairs.

TOP 5 EAST ASIAN
RESTAURANTS
Thanks to the make-up of its immigrant
communities, São Paulo's best
East Asian
food
tends to be Japanese and Korean
rather than Chinese or Thai.
Liberdade
, the
city's Japanese quarter, is full of restaurants
and sushi bars. More recently, a number of
low-priced Korean restaurants have been
opening up in
Bom Retiro
to cater for the
neighbourhood's large Korean community.

Excellent, traditionally
presented sushi, sashimi, noodle and other Japanese
dishes are offered here. Unusual for Brazil, eel (sautéed
with soy sauce and sake; R$80) is regularly served, and sea
urchin roll (R$32) is frequently on the menu.

The most sophisticated of the numerous
Korean restaurants appearing in this
bairro
. Very authentic
- and inexpensive - dishes (the speciality being
gogi gui
,
or Korean barbecue; R$80) are served to largely Korean
diners. Across the road at no. 142 is a slightly simpler
Korean restaurant, the
Gogung

A very
handy place for a drink, a meal, a coffee and cake or just an
ice cream at any time of the day or night, and it's a rare hour
of a rare day that it isn't buzzing. The meaty signature dishes
are named after local streets, so their “Haddock” isn't a fish
but a steak in shitake mushroom sauce with broccoli and
mashed manioc (R$40).

This excellent-value
churrascaria
(it has branches around
town, but this is the best one) has a huge selection of
salads, Brazilian stews and other dishes, and, of course,
lots of meat - various cuts of beef as well as pork, chicken
and fish. The best time to go is lunchtime, when there's
an unlimited R$39 buffet.

Established by a prominent local Italian-Brazilian family
who bought up this run-down street and turned it into a
popular eating venue, this is the flagship: an Italian
restaurant specializing in pasta. There's a choice of
pastas with a big choice of sauces (pesto, carbonara,
arrabiata
and
palermitana
, for example, all go for R$82),
as well as lasagne, risotto and some meat dishes.

Stop in for inexpensive
Eastern European Jewish food, cheesecake and dishes
incorporating contemporary Italian-Brazilian touches. Adi,
the friendly English-speaking Bulgarian-Israeli owner, is a
mine of local information. Snack on gefilte fish (R$10), or
come on Friday or Saturday for a cholent (slow-cooked beef
stew, a traditional Sabbath lunch; R$30).
