In-Depth Information
As the local population could not meet the ever-increasing demands of plantation
owners, factories looked to immigrants for their workforce (see box, p.495). As a result,
São Paulo's population soared, almost tripling to 69,000 by 1890, and to 239,000 by
the end of the next decade. By 1950, when it had reached 2.2 million, São Paulo had
clearly established its dominant role in Brazil's urbanization. Today, with a population
of over eleven million - and over twenty million if you include its sprawling suburbs -
São Paulo is the seventh-largest city in the world, and the biggest south of the equator.
