Libanus 206 Sul, Bloco C, Loja 36 T 61 3244 9795;
map pp.406-407. Perennially crowded spot serving up
excellent-value, hearty Lebanese food (meze platter for
three R$89.90); the playground makes it a good place for
families in the afternoons, when really it's just a
restaurant, but it turns into a bar with a young and
humming
the oldest - and arguably most beautiful - Brazilian musical
genre, played here by masters young and old to an
appreciative, knowledgeable audience. It turns into a gafieira
(dance hall) on Saturday night, with its own house band and
older, intimidatingly good dancers. Thurs-Sat from 9pm.

4576, W gatespub.com.br; map pp.406-407. The main
place to catch local and visiting bands, this venue is much
bigger than it looks from the outside, with a series of rooms
and small stages - resembling in a weird way a British
pub-rock venue. Thursday nights are particularly lively.
Tues-Sun 10pm-3am.

otherwise, are most likely to play.

CRAFT SHOPPING IN BRASÍLIA
Brasília's city centre is dominated by malls, with no independent shops bar a few at the
Rodoviária Central, and the city doesn't really have many outlets for crafts. FUNAI , the federal
agency for indigenous peoples, once controlled all the marketing of indigenous art, via its
own chain of craft shops. But too much of the revenue stayed with FUNAI rather than the
producers, who took matters into their own hands and started setting out their wares on the
patio of the old FUNAI building, in competition with the of cial craft shop inside it. FUNAI
have now moved to the Sector Bancária, a bleak piece of concrete desert in the centre of
town, and have closed their own craft shop, but indigenous people still sell crafts on the
pavement outside (SBS Q.2 Lote 14, behind Banco da Amazônia; Mon-Fri 9am-5pm) - mainly
basketware, wood carvings, ceramics and jewellery - and it's worth popping down to take a
look. Be aware however that some of the sellers have only vague notions of market values and
can naively ask ridiculously low prices for their wares, which it would obviously be wrong to
take advantage of, so this is one of the rare places where the shopper may need to pay more
than the asking price.
The other spot to browse for crafts is the Feira de Artesanato da Torre de Televisão
(Eixo Monumental Oeste, just west of the Torre de Televisão, W feiradeartesanatodatorredetv
.com; Fri-Sun 7am-6pm), with stalls selling clothes and accessories, toys and semi-precious
stones, as well as places to stop for a drink or a snack.
