best-known bar/restaurant in town: great atmosphere,
renowned politico hangout and reasonably priced. Famous
among locals for the best salad bar (R$29) and lunch buffet
(R$52) in the city, and for the Saturday feijoada (R$52).

407. Sweet crêpes of course, but savoury ones too - a
carpaccio in mustard sauce crêpe for example (R$24.80),
with an “Afrodite” (passion fruit and white chocolate crêpe;
R$19.75) for afters. Yum. There's a second branch at 210
Sul, Bloco B, Loja 24 ( T 61 3443 2050). Mon-Thurs & Sun

Fogo de Chåo SHS Q.5, Bloco E T 61 3322 4666; map
p.408. Best option if you're staying in one of the nearby
hotels and don't feel like going far - good, varied and
unlimited churrascaria of excellent char-grilled meats
(R$104), infinitely preferable to any of the hotel
restaurants. Mon-Fri noon-midnight, Sat & Sun
noon-10.30pm.

pizza in town: wood-fired kiln and original ingredients. Try
the eponymous Fratello (R$43.90), topped with sweet
pickled aubergine. There's another branch at 109 Norte,

Fritz 404 Sul, Bloco D, Loja 35 T 61 3226 8033; map
pp.406-407. This spot is known for its German food, with
plenty of schnitzels and wurst ( kackwürste with fries
R$29.90), and best of all, real German beer. Mon-Sat
noon-11.30pm, Sun noon-5pm.
Sabor Brasil 302 Sul, Bloco A, Lojas 1-5 T 61 3226
5942; map p.408. Good value for budgeteers, a big,
varied lunchtime buffet with lots of salads, fish, meat and
good vegetarian options (R$40.90/kg Mon-Sat, R$45.90/
kg Sun), and in the evenings a R$25.90 rodizio . Mon-Fri

Sbarro 405 Sul, Bloco C, Loja 20 T 61 3536 2347; map
pp.406-407. Self-service Italian food by the kilo (pastas,
salads, meatballs and suchlike; R$35.90/kg), or reasonable
pizzas by the slice (R$5.50-8.50). Perhaps not quite like
mamma used to make, but fills a gap and won't break the
bank. Daily 11am-11pm.
Tortaria di Lorenza 109 Norte, Bloco C, Loja 19
T 61 3347 0474; map pp.406-407. Gooey pastries
(custard-filled éclair R$8) and espresso coffee (R$4) make
this an ideal spot for some Continental-style elevenses or a
sugar-and-caffeine pick-me-up. Daily 8am-10pm.

pp.406-407. This upmarket French-owned patisserie and
coffee-house is highly recommended (especially for a late
R$30-35 breakfast at weekends) and serves the best
quiche and cakes in town (quiche lorraine R$15.50). There's
nowhere better for a cup of coffee while you read. Tues-Fri
9am-10pm, Sat 8.30am-10pm, Sun 8am-10pm.
Don Durica 201 Norte, Bloco A T 61 3326 1045,
W dondurica.com.br; map p.408. Serves an excellent
lunch buffet of traditional, quite heavy Brazilian food, such
as stewed rabbit and various dishes of lamb, pork and
suckling pig. If you want something lighter, try the
extremely tasty soup buffet. Mon-Fri noon-3.30pm, Sat
& Sun noon-4pm.
Feitiço Mineiro 306 Norte, Bloco B, Lojas 45-51 T 61

Even without the live music in the evenings (see p.418), this
spot is worth patronizing for the food alone: a buffet of comida
mineira (Minas Gerais food; lunch R$36.50/kg, supper R$62/
kg), heavy on the pork, bean sauce and sausages, prepared
the traditional way on a wood-fired stove. Daily noon-1am.
NIGHTLIFE AND ENTERTAINMENT
Every June, Brasília hosts the Brasília International Film Festival (BIFF; W biffestival.com), showcasing new South
American and international movies, mostly at the Cine Cultura in Liberty Mall (SCN Q.2 Bloco D; T 61 3327 1588,
W cinecultura.com.br), or else in the Museu Nacional (see p.409).
here: the excellent way meze and cold beer complement
each other. A selection of hot meze goes for R$34, a
selection of cold ones for R$27.50. This is a new branch; the
original one at 109 Sul, Bloco A, Lojas 2-4 ( T 61 3244
1717) being rather less spacious. Daily noon-11pm.

successful re-creation of an old-style Rio bar, complete
with surly waiters, and what most Brasília drinking holes
completely lack: a bit of atmosphere. If it wasn't for the

politicians, this place is best late at night when it gets very
crowded. The tables outside are very pleasant, huddled
under trees; the similar Café do Brasil next door is also
