LODGES AROUND PORTO VELHO

the middle of rainforest and plantations 260km south
of Porto Velho offers accommodation in fan-cooled
eco-rooms with shared bath and a/c standards with
fridge and private bathroom. There's a swimming pool
and plenty of activities on offer including football,
volleyball and table tennis, a s well as birdwatching,
jungle walks and fishing trips. R$120
Salsalito Jungle Park BR364, Km 43 towardsCuiabá

has several nice detached bungalows for rent and a
floating restaurant in a beautiful part of the river;
activities include horse riding, boat safaris, fishing trips,
dolphin spo tting a nd hikes along short forest- and river-
edge trails. R$200

This large eco-resort offers bungalow accommodation, a
restaurant, a bar and plenty of facilities including a
swimming pool, football l field and beach volleyball in a
pleasant setting. R$390
Caravela do Madeira Rua José Camacho 104
T 69 3221 6641 . One of the best restaurants in town,
Caravela has views over the Rio Madeira, from where it gets
its name. The speciality here is fish - the delicious costela
de tambaqui (R$95.50) is big enough for two. The
welcoming interior features an open-brick wall and
colourful paintings, and there's live piano music on Sun.

Mariposa Av Lauro Sodré 2211 T 69 3223 3312,
W mariposa.com.br. This welcoming restaurant painted in
warm hues of red and blue with a wooden ceiling featuring
spotlights offers a tasty lunch buffet (R$21.90). Along with
Brazilian dishes, there's a very decent selection of sushi too,
while in the evenings it's à la carte. Make sure to try one of the
crêpes (there are over fifity types, both sweet and savoury), for
which the restaurant has won a number of awards. Mon
6pm-midnight, Tues-Sun noon-3pm & 6pm-midnight.
Public Haus Rua Benjamin Constant 1760, Bairro São
Cristóvão ( T 69 3223 6001). This microbrewery-cum-
restaurant offers an excellent por quilo lunch (Mon-Fri
R$27.90/kg, Sat & Sun R$39.90/kg) with a large selection
of dishes along with a separate grilled meats section. In the
evenings it's à la carte, with a range of great picanha dishes
(R$55), to wash down with one of the great house beers on
tap (R$3). Daily 11am-3pm & 5pm-midnight.
Remanso do Tucunaré Av Brasília 1506, B.N. Senhora
das Graças T 92 3224 4524. This local institution has
been going strong for four decades, serving superb fish
dishes to all and sundry - the names of famous customers
proudly line the walls. The moqueca (fish stew; R$80) does
particularly well and serves three to four; if there's two of
you, try the filé de dourado à parmegiana (R$70). Daily
6.30am-11pm.
Ristorante San Gennaro Rua Duque de Caxias 568

Located within a beautifully restored building that formerly
housed the Madeira-Mamoré railway workers, this warm
and welcoming Sicilian-owned restaurant offers a range of
Italian dishes, including pizza (R$35), pasta (R$25) and meat
mains - try the filetto alla parmigiana for two (battered filet
of steak; R$63). The cavernous cellar features bare stone
walls and is lined with more than four hundred types of wine
from the world over, with an emphasis on Italian, Brazilian,
Chilean and Argentine grapes. Tues-Sun 7pm-midnight.
DRINKING AND NIGHTLIFE
Boteco da Fama Av Pinheiro Machado 1356 T 69 3043
3001. This large open-fronted bar with wooden tables and
fun murals hosts live country music bands on Tues, while on
Fri & Sat there are rock sessions at 10pm. Sun afternoons
see crowds here at 6pm for some popular pagode music.
Footie matches are screened here too, and there's an
attached club open on Fri & Sat. Beers R$6, cocktails R$16.

Emporium Av Presidente Dutra 3366, Caiari T 69
3221 2665. This pretty bright blue building has tables
lining the street, lit up by little electric lanterns. It's a
popular spot for food and drinks and there are daily live
MPB music sessions at 8pm. Mains R$65, beer R$6.
Mon-Sat 6pm-1.30am.
Informal Av Brasilia 1962 T 69 3221 1912. This
cavernous pub with bare brick walls is packed with retro
curios, from old film posters to black-and-white photos of
famous rock bands. It's a hugely popular place and can get
pretty crowded, especially when the live music kicks off.
Wed-Sat 7pm-5am.
Out Beer João Goulart 3002, corner Av Calama
T 69 3224 1855. “Drink less and drink well” is the slogan
of this newly opened bar, and with two hundred beer
labels there certainly is plenty of choice; prices range from
R$4.50 to a whopping R$280. There are plenty of imported
beers too, which customers can enjoy at the little tables
within or on the open-air patio. Tues-Fri 5pm-1am, Sat
4pm-2am, Sat 11am-3am.
