The three-way frontier
Th e point where Brazil meets Peru and Colombia is known as the three-way frontier ,
and it's somewhere you may end up staying for a few days sorting out red tape or
waiting for a boat. Th e best place to stay is in Leticia in Colombia, from where you can
also head out on jungle trips. A fl eet of moto-taxis , lanchas and Colombian moto carros
connect the three countries at very reasonable prices.
For many centuries the three-way frontier has been home to the Tikuna, once large
in number, but today down to a population of around 10,000. Th eir excellent
handicrafts - mainly string bags and hammocks - can be bought in Leticia.
Tabatinga
TABATINGA is not the most exciting of towns, and is pretty dodgy, especially at night.
Travellers who usually end up here waiting for a boat or plane to Manaus or Iquitos
prefer to hop over the border to Leticia for the duration of their stay, even if they don't
plan on going any further into Colombia. Tabatinga is the place to complete Brazilian
exit (or entry) formalities with the Polícia Federal (see p.382).
