base yourself in nearby Alter do Chão (see p.357), a laidback beach resort and the perfect
base for exploring some of the most beautiful river scenery the Amazon basin has to offer.
The area around Santarém (see p.356) has lately been transformed by a soy-growing
boom, and the docks are now dominated by a Cargill grain terminal. But don't be
deceived: there are plenty of things to do in the surrounding region, which is still
largely (and inexplicably) unvisited by tourists.

The waterfront
By far the most interesting place in Santarém, at any hour of the day or night, is the
waterfront
. here are always dozens of boats tied up here, with the accompanying
bustle of people and cargoes being loaded and unloaded, and constant activity in
the shops and outfitters by the water. You will probably have to wander along the
waterfront anyway to find boats to points elsewhere, but a sunset stroll is reason
enough to venture down this way.

Centro Cultural João Fona
is located in a fine building inaugurated in 1868 and
standing in splendid isolation on Praça Santarém. The highlight of the collection is
some stunning tribal pottery, small but elaborately decorated and around 2000 years
old. The building itself is also very pleasant and the shady internal courtyard is a good
spot to hide from the sun on a hot day.
