da Areia. Over the next hundred years, the original shacks were replaced by some of
the finest colonial buildings in northern Brazil. Now the waterfront is no more than a
landing place for fishing boats and ferries, but slave ships once docked here, bringing in
workers for the cotton and sugar plantations upriver. Then, the harbour was crowded
with cargo boats, mostly from Liverpool, shipping out the exports of what - from about
1780 to 1840 - was a prosperous trading centre. In the late 1800s the city fell into a
slump that didn't really end until the 1960s. As economic decline bit deep, the
merchants and plantation owners sold up and moved on. As with many Northeastern
cities, politics here came to be dominated by a single family, in this case the Sarneys;

, former president of Brazil (1985-90) and senator until 2013, wields
enormous influence over Maranhão's public life, and his daughter,
Roseana Sarney
