ARRIVAL AND INFORMATION
JERICOACOARA
By plane
With the opening of Aeroporto de Jericoacoara
(30km from the beach area) in 2014 the days of this being
an isolated northern resort are well and truly over. Schedules
were not finalized at the time of writing, but domestic
flights are expected from most major Brazilian hubs.
By bus
“Jeri” remains accessible only via a bumpy unpaved
trail through the dunes, with most buses going only as far
as Jijoca, 20km south of the beach. Fretcar (
W
fretcar.com
.br) does run two daily buses from Fortaleza direct to Jeri
(7.50am; R$63; 6.30pm; R$48; 6hr-6hr 45min), with an
additional 3.45pm service (R$48) Sun-Fri. Buses make the
return journey at 6.30am, 2.45pm and 10.30pm.
To and from Icaraí
From Icaraí (see p.307) you'll have to
take the 5.50am Fretcar bus to Amontada (1hr), where four
Fretcar buses a day zip up to Jijoca (2hr 25min); simply
reverse the route heading in the other direction (buses
depart Amontada for Icaraí at 5.50pm). From Icaraí there is
a daily bus (5.30am) to Fortaleza.
To Lençóis and São Luís
Moving on further west to
Parque Nacional dos Lençóis and São Luís, Fretcar buses
connect Jijoca with Camocim (4 daily; R$42; 1hr 30min),
from where there is one daily bus to Parnaíba (4.15pm;
2hr 45min).
By truck or buggy
If you end up at Jijoca,
camionetes
(small 4WD trucks) run back and forth to Jeri for R$10,
though they tend only to run frequently between 6am
and 10am - otherwise beach buggies will make the trip
for R$50-60.
Tours
Tour operators also offer direct door-to-door
transfers between Fortaleza and Jeri for around R$60
(see p.303). In Jeri you can also get direct transfers via 4WD
to Lençóis, jumping-off point Barreirinhas, for around
R$1200 (for up to four people) - expensive but a huge
time-saver (1 day of travel).
