In-Depth Information
Th ough Recife o cially dates its foundation to 1537, it was the Dutch that really
developed the city following their conquest of Olinda in 1630 (see p.637). Th e Dutch
made Recife the capital of their Brazilian colony, as there was a fi ne natural harbour
that Olinda lacked. Th e Dutch drained and reclaimed the low-lying swampy land,
and the main evidence of their presence today is not so much their few surviving
churches and forts dotted up and down the coast (the Portuguese destroyed virtually
everything when they recaptured the area in 1654), as the very land on which the core
of Recife is built.
Avenida Dantas Barreto and the Praça da República
h e broad Avenida Dantas Barreto forms the spine of the central island of Santo
Antônio , lined with street markets almost its entire length, and criss-crossed with a web
of crowded, narrow lanes lined with stalls and shops. It ends in the much quieter Praça
da República , fi lled with majestic palms and surrounded by Recife's grandest public
