.com.br. This place wins kudos for novelty value only; the
primary reason for a visit is to try their now infamous
“invention”, chiclete de camarãos (literally “shrimp
bubblegum”), basically shrimps smothered in strings of
melted cheese. You will love it or hate it. Though their
roasted shrimp ( espeto de camarão ) is good, most of the
seafood here is just so-so. Mains R$40-60. Sun-Thurs

on the seafront with free wi-fi, excellent espresso,
sandwiches and salads; an a/c-cooled sanctuary from Skol

knocking out mouth-watering cakes, savoury pastries and
gourmet coffee. Mon-Sat 6am-8pm.

green beans and sweet potato chips) in an artsy space. Free
transport from your hotel. Mon-Sat 11am-11pm, Sun

Brazilian ice cream, from traditional flavours (chocolate,
vanilla) to those exotic local tastes ( jaca, mangaba, acerola ).

CENTRO
Padaria Palácio Dos Pães Rua do Comércio 672 T 82
3326 3114. Most of the options in the centre are simple lunch
counters and lanchonetes , and this is the classic example, a
no-frills place serving locals since 1970, with bar stools, cakes,
sandwiches and the cheese “X-burgers”. Daily 7am-6pm.
Pastel Japonês Rua Boa Vista 64. Popular snack stop
serving deep-fried pastels with chicken, meat or cheese
fillings (R$2.50, or R$3.50 with drink). They taste better
when you add the spicy ketchup. Takeaway or sit along tiled
benches inside. Mon-Sat 11am-7pm.

DRINKING AND NIGHTLIFE
For nightlife , the area around Rua Sá de Albuquerque (in the Jaraguá district) is a fashionable part of the city that's
especially lively from Thursday to Saturday, when the main street is closed off to tra c and the bars and restaurants put
their tables outside. Otherwise stick to the beach bars ( barracas ) in Pajuçara and Ponta Verde, or the strip further north
in Jatiúca.

Jatiúca T 82 3311 9052. Good place to start the evening
on the Jatiúca strip, with an open beer tent/beer garden
format, selling Brahma (R$4.99; half price 4-7pm daily),
decent seafood and featuring live MPB, pop rock and
sertanejo bands. Mon-Fri 4pm-1am, Sat 11am-1am,
Sun 11am-midnight.

5488. No-nonsense beer hall, something of a local
institution in the heart of the pedestrianized shopping area
in the centre (look for the Chinese-style roof ), selling beer
and tasty bar food. Note, however, this is a day-time only
joint. Mon-Sat 9am-7pm.
Kanoa Av Silvio Carlos Viana, barraca 25, Ponta

the best bar on the beach, always packed with the in-crowd
and featuring great DJs and live bands (MPB, sertanejo ).

tables on the sand, live music, cold beers and great snacks
(fried prawns, carne de sol ), plus their own jangada
(sailboat; up to 7 people) you'll see offshore. Cover charged

that, at Ponta Verde there's a small internet café (without
food or drink, however) on the second floor of the Pavilão

both on the first block of Rua do Livramento, close to the
corner with Rua Boa Vista, in the centre of the city.

Praia do Francês
Sixteen kilometres south of Maceió, the coast road (AL-101) loops around Praia do
