Baía de Todos os Santos
To get a closer look at the enticing islands scattered across the
Baía de Todos os
Santos
- 31 of them, most either uninhabited or home to a few simple fishing
villages - most visitors join
day-long cruises
on private schooners from Salvador; the
kiosks in the city's Terminal Turístico in Cidade Baixa are the easiest places to buy
tickets (see box opposite). It's less busy during the week, but these boats have their
advantages; if you manage to get on one full of Brazilian tourists you're likely to
have a very lively time.

A favourite target of Salvador day-trip boats, 6km-long
Ilha dos Frades
is best known
for its gorgeous beaches and unspoiled interior of Mata Atlântica (a protected
reserve), though there are also three small villages on the island with a permanent
