Museu Náutico da Bahia
sits within the picturesque
Forte de Santo Antônio
on the
windy Barra point, where the Atlantic Ocean becomes the bay of Todos os Santos. It
houses a collection of seafaring instruments, maps, model boats, art and a small
amount of written historical information (all labelled in English). Founded in 1534 as
a wattle-and-daub construction, this was the first European fort on the Brazilian coast,
meant to defend the newly founded settlement and access to the bay (the current
fortifications date from 1696 to 1702). Most people come for the views from the
