PERSONAL SAFETY IN SALVADOR
Salvador (especially the
centro histórico
) has more reported
robberies
and
muggings
of
tourists than anywhere else in Bahia (and possibly Brazil). However, trouble is much easier to
avoid than the statistics suggest. The vast majority of tourists who get mugged go exploring
along pretty, but deserted, narrow streets. However enticing this might seem, never wander
off the main drags or down ill-lit side streets in the day or at night, and don't use the
Elevador Lacerda
(see box, p.206) after early evening. Again, though it seems tempting
(because it's so close), never walk up and down the winding roads that connect the Cidade
Alta and the Cidade Baixa. Be careful using ordinary
city buses
on Sundays when there are
few people around - the
executivo
bus is the safest option - and avoid wandering the
backstreets of Barra at night.
If you stick to these rules you should have no problems: the main tourist area around the
Pelourinho
is heavily policed and busy until quite late at night, and is therefore relatively safe.
Needless to say, leave expensive jewellery, watches and electronics in the hotel while touring
the old city, and if you are mugged, do not resist. The Brazil Basics chapter has more
