ACCOMMODATION AND EATING
Booking ahead is essential during the Festa do Imigrante Italiano de Santa Teresa , an annual celebration of Italian
culture and traditions that takes place over a four-day period, coinciding with the last weekend of June. Italian food rules
in Santa Teresa, and is probably the most obvious sign of its roots. Don't expect Tuscan levels of perfection, obviously, but
it's all pretty good.

Bar Elite Rua Coronel Bonfim Júnior 104 T 27 9736
8488. This classic old café/bar is hard to beat for ambience,
retaining an old Italian feel with the bar on top of an antique
vitrine, old photos lining the walls, locals reading the paper
and dusty bottles of wines in cabinets along the wall, all
inside a 1919 building opposite the church. Stick with beer,
wine and cachaça - the coffee is served sweet from a flask.
Hours tend to be irregular in practice. Daily 9am-8pm.

Santa Maria de Jetibá
he road between Santa Teresa and SANTA MARIA DE JETIBÁ (the ES-261) passes
through hilly terrain, densely cultivated with coffee bushes, interspersed with pine
plantations and, on the steepest of hillsides, patches of Mata Atlântica. Santa Maria
is another thriving country town, but this time with Pomeranian (German) roots.
Virtually the entire population is descended from mid-nineteenth-century immigrants
from Pomerania (now part of Poland) and today remains bound together by a common
heritage based on the continued use of the Pommersch Platt dialect and membership in
the Lutheran Church.
The main commercial centre lies at the southern end of town, along Avenida
Frederico Grulke , a busy thoroughfare lined with shops, and tiny Praça Saudável ,
with its German-themed kiosks. Nearby, the Prefuitura or “Radhaus” is a giant,
Hanseatic-looking structure, with the fairly ineffectual tourist o ce (really a small
craft shop) nearby.
Museu da Imigração Pomerana
Rua Dalmácio Espíndula • Tues-Sun 9am-5.30pm • Free
The history of the area's settlement is commemorated by the small Museu da
Imigração Pomerana near the town hall at the end of Rua Dalmácio Espíndula.
Inside is a handful of artefacts chronicling life in the town, with labels in English
(and German).
ARRIVAL AND DEPARTURE SANTA MARIA DE JETIBÁ
By bus Buses run between here and Santa Teresa at 5.10am, 1pm and 3pm (1hr) from along Av Frederico Grulke.
