Vila Velha
The massive Terceira Ponte ('Third Bridge”; cars R$0.80; no pedestrians) connects Vitória
with Vila Velha on the other side of the Baía de Vitória, the state's largest city, with roots
that actually go back further than those of its neighbour (1535). Though governed
separately, the two cities effectively form a single metropolitan area, with people
commuting in both directions. Whereas Vitória is the state's administrative centre, Vila
Velha is primarily a popular beach resort, with the usual wall of high-rise condos lining
attractive Praia da Costa , a safe place for swimming. Otherwise the main reason to visit is
the spectacularly located Convento da Penha , soaring high above both cities.

The most memorable sight in the whole Vitória area, the Convento da Penha traces its
foundation to a simple hermitage founded way back in 1558 by one Father Pedro
