Opened in 1940, this is one of Oscar Niemeyer's earliest
creations - though not one of his best. The “standard”
rooms at this three-star hotel are on the small side and
overlook the garden, but the suites have tremendous
views. Offers good service and there's a nice pool in the
Burle Marx-designed gardens. R$235

in common areas giving it a boutique feel. Rooms are rustic
and simple but comfy enough, with cable TV and smart,

and free afternoon coffee and cakes dail y 5-7p m. Note that
it's a steep walk up to the main square. R$260

eighteenth-century building just across from the Igreja de
São Francisco de Assis, with rooms decorated with period
furniture and artwork. However, only seven of the twenty-
seven rooms have a worthwhile view and many of the
other rooms have no window at all. Noise can also be a
problem - the students in th e neigh bouring república are
famous for their lively parties. R$325

small pousada built around a courtyard. The rooms are
attractively furnished in natural woods and the artwork is
mostly by the proprie tor wh o works in her printing atelier

eighteenth-century house converted into a pleasant
pensão (formerly graced by pre-eminent Brazilian singers
Vinicius de Moraes and Dorival Caymmi), filled with a
collection of rustic antiques that would do credit to a
museum. There's a wonderful view from the reading room
on the first floor, plus excellent breakfasts are served.
Complimentary tea and cake are available at any time.
There are only six rooms, so book in advance. R$260

hotel remains one of the most luxurious in Ouro Preto,
especially following a major refurbishment (free wi-fi, flat-
screen cable TVs). Rooms have an attractive mix of period
and modern furnishings, plus there are c omforta ble
lounges and a pool within the terraced gardens. R$275

colonial building, this restaurant specializes in French and
Italian dishes but also has some tasty local specials; a mineira
buffet is served at lunch. Located right alongside the Igreja
Francisco de Assis, near Praça Tiradentes, the views across
town from the first-floor dining room are quite spectacular.
Main courses cost about R$35. Daily noon-11.45pm.
Café Geraes Rua Conde de Bobadela (aka Rua Direita)

fairly priced sandwiches and soups, delicious cakes and
wine, as well as more extensive dinners, all served inside
the gorgeous interior of an old town house (mains
R$30-50). The hip Escadabaixo bar is downstairs too. Daily
noon-midnight.
choice for mineira cuisine is this rather elegant restaurant,
in a beautifully converted colonial townhouse. Mains
range R$25-50; try the exquisite stewed chicken ( frango
com quiabo ; R$38 for two people). Daily 11am-3pm &
7-11pm.

Established by the Tropia family in 1958, this restaurant has
become something of a local institution (the house is the
birthplace of poet Alphonsus de Guimaraens), with
pleasantly rustic decor and smooth service. Their mineira
buffet is R$40 (R$20 for kids), and also usually includes
feijoada . Daily 11.30am-4pm.
Chocolates Ouro Preto Praça Tiradentes 111 T 31

most popular chocolatier offers excellent espresso (R$2.90)
as well as hot chocolate (R$5.90-6.60), rich, tempting
brownies (R$12.50) and even local microbrews from
Cervejaria Ouropretana (R$13) in its casual café. Also has
free wi-fi. There is a second branch at Rua Getúlio Vargas
66. Daily 9am-7pm.

cooking, one of the few alternatives is the pizza (and wine)

the tourist information desk in the Cultural Centre, serving
quality coffee (R$3.50), quiche (R$16.50) and a superb
range of local Ouropretana microbrews (R$8-9) as well as
