Author picks
From remote Jesuit missions to São Paulo's rush
hour and the vast jungles of Amazonia, our
hard-travelling authors have visited every corner
of Brazil. Here are their personal highlights:
Best street snack , Head to Acarajé da Cira in
Salvador (see p.221) for sumptuous acarajé
(deep-fried balls of black-eyed peas stuffed with
spicy seafood).
Most unusual place to stay Check out The
Maze in Rio (see p.94), located in the middle of
one of the city's safest favelas , and famous for its
jazz nights and panoramic views (see p.104).
Mesmerizing rides Glide over the Amazon
rainforest in Acre by hot-air balloon, spotting
geoglyphs and curious geometrical formations
as you go (see p.395).
Best beach bar It's hard to beat Pedra Sobre
Pedras in Morro de São Paulo, perched on a
wooden deck with magnificent views and open
24 hours a day (see p.236).
Microbrewing heaven Since the 1990s
southern Brazil has been experiencing something
of a craft beer revolution, with the German-
influenced breweries in Blumenau some of the
best (see p.596).
Natural wonders To see the Brazilian coast at its
most raw and beautiful, visit the jaw-dropping
sand dunes and lagoons of the Parque Nacional
dos Lençóis (see p.322).
Off the beaten path Alter do-Chão (see p.357)
is a laidback town in the middle of the Amazon,
with Caribbean-style beaches and surrounded by
jungle - surreal but wonderful.
A futebol match to remember It's surprising
how many travellers skip Rio's Maracanã stadium
(see p.88), but seeing a derby game is a magical
experience - exhilarating and mildly terrifying.
Our author recommendations don't end
here. We've flagged up our favourite places
- a perfectly sited hotel, an atmospheric
café, a special restaurant - throughout the
Guide, highlighted with the
symbol.
