4. Ligonier
From the summit the drive heaves and sighs across crests and valleys, then levels off as it

Ligonier'sMainStreet,whereapicture-perfectvillagesquare,hemmedinbyhistoricstone
buildings, greets motorists. At regular intervals the chimes from three bell towers mark the
time of the day, another note from a past that's ever present in this enjoyable town.
The next leg of the drive heads southward on Rte. 711, a backcountry byway passing
amid hilly pastures that tumble and collide at unlikely angles. After several miles the drive
switches onto Rte. 31 and continues east for a short distance to Rte. 381 south. Here you'll
dip into a valley laced by a stream and dotted with little towns. A bit farther is Bear Run
Nature Reserve, a 5,000-acre parkland with impressive stands of towering oaks and hem-
locks.
5. Fallingwater
Asked to draw up plans for a house that would look out on a waterfall, architect Frank
Lloyd Wright went one step further and designed a structure he situated directly atop the
ledge-leaping stream. Aptly named Fallingwater, the sandstone residence, surrounded by a
dark woodland, blends so well with its setting that it seems to spring from the earth itself.
Take the tour to hear the music of the splashing stream play in nearly every room.
