4. Newburgh-Beacon Bridge

challenge on Storm King Highway (Rte. 218). Carved into the side of Storm King Moun-
tain, this serpentine cliff-clinger seems to hang by its fingernails, twisting and turning its
way north to Cornwall-on-Hudson, where it rejoins Rte. 9W. The views—for passengers,
at least—are truly breathtaking.
At I-84 the Newburgh-Beacon Bridge returns the drive to the Hudson's eastern flank.
The city of Beacon, hugging the river's edge, is named for Mt. Beacon, where Revolu-
tionary War patriots lit warning fires to signal George Washington's army of British troop
movements in the Highlands. To the west the massive hulk of Storm King Mountain
punches the skyline, a magisterial presence looking over your shoulder as you continue
driving south.
Boscobel, Italian for “beautiful woods,” is regarded as one of the finest examples of Federal architecture in the country.
5. Cold Spring

tury. Along its historic Main Street, one can practically hear the clip-clop of horse-drawn
carriages, and the town's waterfront gazebo is a graceful spot for taking in a sunset over
West Point.
