In-Depth Information
Did you know…
In 1900 three hundred workers began constructing the six-story, 121-room
Boldt Castle on Heart Island, complete with tunnels, a powerhouse, Italian gar-
dens, a drawbridge, and a dove cote. After Boldt's wife, Louise, died suddenly
and all construction was immediately halted, the castle stood empty for 73
years. In 1977 the Thousand Islands Bridge Authority acquired the property in
order to preserve it for the enjoyment of future generations. During its 33 years
of ownership of Boldt Castle and the Boldt Yacht House, the authority has in-
vested nearly $29 million dollars in rehabilitation efforts and improvements.

Bay. The Island's south shore lies along the Narrows where seagoing vessels large and
small pass by in a continual parade. Nearby Thousand Island Park, a private community of
broad streets and vintage Victorian homes, is a reminder of the way some of the well-to-do
spend their summers.
As the drive continues southwest on Rte. 12, it whisks into the village of Clayton. Here

5. Cape Vincent
Cape Vincent sits on a point of land that juts into Lake Ontario at the point where it meets

munity—supporters of Napoleon Bonaparte. Though their plan to have the emperor join
them never worked out, they left a legacy of French customs still celebrated in an annual
festival. At the Cape's western tip, the 1827 Tibbetts Point Lighthouse still guides ships
between the lake and the seaway.
