Cook-Underwood Road Loop
At the little town of Cook turn onto the Cook-Underwood Road for a scenic detour north
to Willard and then south again to Underwood, where the White Salmon River joins the
Columbia.Theroadwindsupanddownthroughlovelycountryside,andanoverlookalong
the way affords a spectacular view of the Columbia River Gorge, the Hood River Bridge,
and, rising in the distance, majestic 11,285-foot Mt. Hood.
Mt. Adams looms over the shores of Trout Lake, which is part of a designated Natural Area Preserve that provides habitat
for hundred of wildlife species.

Trout Lake
Foranotherscenicsidetrip,headnorthonRte.141,whichfollowstheturbulentWhiteSal-
mon River to Trout Lake. Pausing at the river towns of Husum and BZ Corners, you can
view white-water rafters riding the rapids. Trout Lake itself, a tranquil and unspoiled little
community, serves as the gateway to Mt. Adams, the snowy giant that dominates all views
to the north. A few miles west of Trout Lake, you can explore natural ice caves, where fri-
gid drafts greet all who enter and lanterns illuminate the natural sculptures within.
