2. Berthierville
Following the course of the river north along Rte. 138, King's Road, the road veers inland
to Berthierville, making room for wetlands that expand along the river's west bank. Drive
along Rue Frontenac and Rue Montcalm to gawk at the mansions erected by high-powered
British émigrés in the early 1800s.
Canada's first Presbyterian sanctuary is located at the intersection of routes 138 and

James Cuthbert.
3. Lac Saint-Pierre
AtBerthierville the river opensinto Lac Saint-Pierre, amore than 100,000-acre UNESCO-
designated biosphere reserve that covers aquatic grassbeds, marshland, swamps, islands,
and meadows, as well as the lake itself. Rte. 158 leads to the village of Saint-Ignace-de-
Loyola, where ferry service shuttles visitors across the lake to Sorel-Tracy. Tour boats and
kayaking companies guide their crafts through the myriad channels of the archipelago,
whichboaststheworld'slargestcolonyofherons.Morethan5,000ofthesemigratorybirds
come to Lac Saint-Pierre each year to nest in the arms of its silver maples and feast in its
waters.
4. Trois-Rivières
The mouth of the Saint Maurice River splits into the “three rivers” of name at the port city
of Trois-Rivières, a picturesque stop about midway between Montreal and Quebec City.
The tourist information office on the King's Road points visitors to lodging, outdoor activ-
ities, and cultural destinations—from city walking tours and historic homes to churches
andchapels.AmongthelandmarksarenearbyMuséedesUrsulines,BoucherdeNiverville
Manor, and the Old Prison, located at the Quebec Folk Culture Museum. Harbourfront
Park,atri-level promenade, yields unobstructed riverviewsandaccess todiningandshop-
ping.
5. Cap-de-la-Madeleine
Continuing along the King's Road, the drive spans the mouths of the St. Maurice and the
sandy beaches along the riverway, part of the Île Saint-Quentin park, which also offers in-
terpretive walking trails and recreation facilities. On the northwest bank the community of
