2. Uisge Ban Falls
About 10 miles north of town, North Branch Road leads to Uisge Ban Provincial Park.
UisgeBan (ish-ka ban) takesitsnamefromtheGaelic,meaningwhitewater.A50-footwa-
terfall greets hikers at the end of Falls Trail, a 1.8-mile path leading hikers through mixed
forest and into a deep gorge where 500-foot towers of stone await.
3. Cape Smokey Viewpoint
For the most dramatic views, follow Cabot Trail in a counterclockwise direction. Scenic
viewpoints dot the roadway at the village of St. Ann's, the bay, and beyond. The roadway
seems to rise straight into the sky as it mounts the highland cliffs and reaches its zenith
at 900 feet up on Cape Smokey. Turn into the provincial park and linger over the expanse
of ocean that drops below. A 5-mile trail rewards experienced hikers with an unparalleled
panorama that includes Middle Head and the Ingonish area.
4. Ingonish
Descending from the cape, the community of Ingonish offers something for everyone—a
pebbly, cobblestone shoreline for beachcombers, the North Atlantic's finest links for golf
lovers, and hiking trails for all ages. The popular Middle Head Trail wanders through
mixed forest to the very edges of the cliff, close enough to smell the salt spray rising from
the rocks below.
