SANDHILL CRANES
One of the great spectacles of the bird world can be witnessed in the Grand Island and
Kearney area. From the beginning of March until mid-April, large flocks of sandhill
cranes pause to rest and feed along the Platte River. An estimated 80 percent of the
cranes' total population visits the area, with the heaviest concentrations found along
