Today a bustling railroad and manufacturing city, Grand Island was founded in 1857 when
GermanfamiliessettlednearthebanksofthePlatteRiver.Westward-boundpioneersandthe
short-lived Pony Express soon passed through, and later the transcontinental railroad came,
itsbuilderslayingtheframeworkofthepresenttownsomefivemilesnorthoftheimmigrant
community.
