trail there leads to a lookout point that offers what is perhaps the best view available of the
Manitou Islands (reachable by ferry from nearby Leland).
7. Leland
Lured by an annual snowfall exceeding 100 inches, “snowbirds” flock to the rolling hills
of this lakeshore every winter.
In summer postcard-pretty Leland, a fishing port sandwiched between Lake Michigan
andLakeLeelanau,isaperfectplacetoidlewhilewaitingfortheManitouferryorafishing
charter. Turn-of-the-century shanties, now scrubbed and spruced up, have re-emerged as
Fishtown, a collection of charming quayside restaurants, galleries, and shops.
A visit to the nearby islands of North and South Manitou is a must for nature lovers.
The North Manitou wilderness beckons backpackers and fishermen, while its smaller sib-
ling,SouthManitou,iscelebratedfortheValleyoftheGiants—a500-year-oldvirginwhite
cedar forest where one of the trees is believed to be the largest of its kind in the world. Off
South Manitou's southern coast rests the wreckage of the Francisco Morazan, its rusty re-
mains as clear a warning of danger as any beacon.
Back on the mainland, orchards in this area overflow with fruit from summer through
autumn, starting with cherries and berries in July and ending with apples and grapes in
September.Duringthatsamemonthenergetic Cohosalmoncanbeseenleaping theLeland
dam on their way to their upstream spawning grounds.
