BRINGING BACK THE BALD EAGLE
The recovery of the bald eagle has become quite a success story, especially in Min-
nesota, and much of the thanks goes to the U.S. Forest Service and its efforts within
the Chippewa National Forest.
To increase numbers, the organization prepared individual management plans for

placed on human activity near eagle nests. The population has exceeded its recovery
goal of 300 occupied nest territories, and recently it was estimated that the Minnesota
population is over 2,300 pairs.

It includes all or part of 48 lakes and boasts a 17 1/2-mile self-guiding auto tour called the
Chippewa Adventure, which circles the wilds east of Marcell and showcases the rich and
varied habitats of the Chippewa National Forest. Information about this auto tour is avail-
able at the Edge of the Wilderness Discovery Center. Although quite primitive in places,
the route abounds with opportunities for spotting wildlife.
