8. Canyon del Muerto
In 1805 Spanish soldiers massacred more than 110 Navajos here. The Canyon of the Dead,
however, takes its name not from the terribly bloody battle, but as a result of a peaceful
expedition led by archaeologists who found a burial ground among the cliffs in the 1880s.
Toviewthechasm,abranchofthelargerCanyondeChelly,backtracktothevisitorcenter,
then follow North Rim Drive.
Canyon del Muerto has even more Anasazi ruins than are to be found in its southern
neighbor. One pueblo, which can be seen from Antelope House Overlook, was a bustling
village, with 91 rooms occupying four stories. Farther along, the overlooks provide views
of1,000-footcliffs,talusslopes(pilesoffallenboulders),andsheerbuttesthatrisedramat-
ically from the canyon and are painted with colorful minerals.
