8. Apache Lake
A few miles farther along, Apache Lake Vista Point looks out across the water to flat-
toppedGoatMountainandthecolorfulPaintedCliffs.Attheoverlookaturnoffleadstothe
ApacheLakeRecreationArea,whichoffersamarina,campground,androckandmountain
climbing. This is also a good place for spotting eagles, ospreys, and red-tailed hawks.
The Roosevelt Dam, 280 feet high and 723 feet long, is the world's largest masonry dam. Roosevelt Lake is no longer the
largest man-made lake in the world, but offers an impressive range of recreational activities.
9. Theodore Roosevelt Dam and Lake
BackagainonRte.88,thenextlegofthejourneyheadsthroughcactus-coveredhillsbefore
arriving at Theodore Roosevelt Dam. Dedicated in 1911, this mammoth structure is the
world's largest masonry dam. Without it, the Apache Trail would never have existed, for
theroadwasbuilttotransportmaterialsandequipment,hauledby20-muleteams,fromthe
nearestrailroadtotheconstructionsite.Thelaborforceforthedamconsistedofbothwhite
men and Indians—groups that had been fierce foes only a generation earlier. Roosevelt
Lake today offers fishing, boating, and camping. Continue on Rte. 188 to Tonto National
Monument.
