San Juan Skyway
Highlighting the ruggedly beautiful San Juan Mountains, this stunning loop
weaves through ranchland, old mining towns, and ancient Indian digs. As you
climb, you'll see a kaleidoscope of colors, from creamy sands and rusty bluffs to
gold aspens in autumn and snowy peaks.
Length: About 230 miles, plus side trips
When to go: Popular year-round, but especially beautiful in early fall when aspen
leaves are golden
Words to the wise: Carry tire chains and a shovel in winter.
