Scuba divers also make the pilgrimage to Patricia Lake to investigate Project Habbakuk,
an“icecraft carrier” made offrozen water andwoodpulpconstructed duringWorldWarII,
though never brought to completion. Wooden support structures, refrigeration equipment,
and a commemorative plaque are the only remaining evidence of this unique project.
23. Maligne Lake Road
Pass through Jasper to Maligne Lake Road (pronounced mah-LEEN ) for a 30-mile drive
considered to be one of the best routes for seeing wildlife. Mule deer, elk, and bighorn
sheep often forage along the roadway, as do bears, coyotes, and wolves. Truly fortunate
visitors may even catch sight of a woodland caribou, one of the most at-risk species in the
park.
The road cuts southeast through a glacial valley and passes spring-fed lakes, open
forests of lodgepole pine and spruce, and the ice-cold waters of the Maligne River. View-

Five bridges span the river far, far below as the downhill path careens through the narrow
limestone canyon.
The final star attraction is Maligne Lake itself, located at the end of the drive. From
its shores visitors depart on what Reader's Digest voters have called the “best boat tour
in Canada.” The 90-minute tour takes visitors to Spirit Island, a tiny tree-spotted patch of

treat.
