venture south of the border. Minerals and salt lure caribou to the roadsides, and the
Icefields Parkway itself plunges through about 12 1/2 miles of migratory terrain.
Since 2001 scientists have been tracking the herds using radio collars in an effort
to determine how predators such as wolves, as well as human interference and wild-
fires, affect caribou behavior and, ultimately, survival.
18. Sunwapta Falls
Continuing north on the parkway, the attention shifts east from peaks and valleys to one
large, long barrier of rock called the Endless Chain Ridge. Signs direct drivers to view-
points above and below rushing Sunwapta Falls (the name means “turbulent river”). The
Sunwapta changes course here, whipping the waters into a violent frenzy before plunging
deep into the canyon.
19. Kerkeslin Goat Lick
The tiny white shapes of mountain goats may be seen on distant alpine and subalpine cliffs
anywhere in Jasper National Park, but you can improve your chances of meeting one (or
more) at the Mt. Kerkeslin viewpoint. The hardy climbers descend from Kerkeslin's red-
rocked slopes to graze on the short grasses, herbs, and other vegetation along the park-
way—anddevourthewhitecalcium- andsulfate-rich soil.Theanimalsaremostoftenseen
in early morning and late evening during the winter months.
