15. Parker Ridge
The trail to Parker Ridge beckons summer hikers for a first look at the 125-square-mile
Columbia Icefield. The broad, straightforward trail is a steep climb through forests of
sharp-smelling subalpine fir and Engleman spruce, home to birds such as Townsend solit-
aire, gray-crowned rosy finch, and ptarmigan. Above the tree line, wildflowers such as
moss campion, rock jasmine, and forget-me-nots bloom amid the desertlike landscape.
After crossing the ridge, just more than a mile up the trail, continue another 1/3 mile for a
rewarding view of the Saskatchewan Glacier, the longest glacier in the icefield.
Mountains that rise from the Valley of the Ten Peaks ring the turquoise waters of Moraine Lake in Banff National Park.
