3. Tunnel Mountain Road
Looping northeast of downtown, Tunnel Mountain Road barrels along the forested switch-
backs of the eponymous mountain. In the summer, start your trip along Tunnel Mountain
Drive for a breathtaking view of the historic Fairmont Banff Springs resort, rebuilt in 1928
as one of the grand hotels of the era. The rushing waters of Bow Falls far below also may

Turn right onto Tunnel Mountain Road, open all year long, to circle north of the moun-
tain—there is no tunnel, despite the name—and take in views of Mt. Rundle and the Bow
River. A short, paved trail to several viewpoints showcases the Bow River Hoodoos, tall
columns of rock left behind by the swiftly moving water that aboriginal groups believed
were once giants, now transformed to stone.
