RED ROCK CANYON
Located west of Las Vegas, this 13-mile, one-way, horseshoe-shaped drive takes visit-
ors past spectacular sandstone cliffs and towering peaks. Turnouts along the way lead
to stunning vistas and inviting trails, such as the short hikes to Lost Creek and Pine
Creek Canyon. Bighorn sheep and wild burros sometimes meander across barren hill-
sides and come to drink at lush, leafy oases.
Wheeler Peak, in Great Basin National Park, may not be the most challenging climb, but the beauty and natural history
of this mountain make it all worthwhile.
7. Great Basin National Park
Continuing 100 miles or so beyond Pioche, the drive ventures deep into Nevada's only na-
tional park, where the trove of scenic riches includes caves, a glacier, some of the world's
