In-Depth Information
Looming above the trail are the fluted cliffs of Red Cathedral. Visible too is Manly
Beacon, a golden peak named for William Lewis Manly, a courageous pioneer who hiked
all the way to Los Angeles to bring back help for travelers stranded in Death Valley in
1849.
12. Artists Drive
This nine-mile, one-way loop drive winds through hilly badlands imbued with such a
patchwork of colors that it looks as though one of the titans had dropped his paintbox. Tin-
tedbytheinteractionofvariousminerals,sediments,andvolcanicdebriswiththeelements,
the landscape is truly rainbow-hued. Artists Palette, in particular, about midway through
the loop, mixes bright colors such as yellow, red, green, and orange with pastel pinks and
lavenders.
The Devil's Golf Course, a large salt pan on the floor of Death Valley in the Badwater Basin, was a daunting obstacle
for forty-niners headed to California goldfields.
