In the 1880s, borax “cottonballs” were gathered from the valley floor and then processed
herebypioneeringentrepreneursandtheirChineselaborers.Theboraxwasthenloaded,as
much as 20 tons at a time, onto massive wagons that were hauled by the famous 20-mule
